Central Statistical Organization: Dates production increased during 2017 by 0.6%

The Central Bureau of Statistics announced on Saturday that dates production increased by 2017 in the year 2017, noting that the date is the main class, which is the center of gravity for the production of dates.
The Ministry of Planning said in a report that “the production dates for 2017 for all categories of the provinces covered amounted to 618.8 thousand tons, an increase of 0.6% from the production last year, which estimated 615.2 thousand tons for the provinces covered.
He added that “the production of alfalfa in Iraq, which is the main category, which is the center of gravity for the production of dates estimated 338.3 thousand tons, an increase of 1.5% from last year’s production, which estimated 333.2 thousand tons and 54.7% of total date production.”
The statement pointed out that “the rate of production per palm was 64.6 kg, and that the highest rate of palm production achieved in the province of Wasit, estimated at 80.4 kg and less productivity of the palm was in the province of Basra, estimated at 46.5 kg.
The Ministry of Agriculture announced in 2010 a strategic plan for ten years to reach the cultivation of 30 million palm trees in all Iraqi provinces.
Until the end of the 1960s, Iraq exported about 75% of the world’s dates and occupies the first place. However, in the last four decades it has fallen to ninth place due to the shortage of water rations, diseases and wars that have killed millions of trees since 1980.
